One of the most popular tours in Fairbanks, or in Alaska for that matter, is Captain Jim Binkley's Riverboat Discovery Cruise. This 4 hour cruise on an authentic sternwheeler will take you just out of Fairbanks on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. You will see a bush pilot demonstration, a fish wheel, and some great Alaskan hospitality and scenery. You will also stop at an authentic Athabascan Indian village and meet a famous Iditarod sled dog team. Cruises depart morning and afternoons from the third week of May to mid September. The same company also offers an excursion to Eldordo Gold Mine, complete with a short train ride and a chance to pan for gold.
Fairbanks is also a great spot to start an adventure to Alaska's arctic regions like Prudhoe Bay or the arctic circle. Trips range from a one day drip by van to the arctic circle to three day trips to Prudhoe Bay and Alaska's oil fields and back. Fairbanks has a great museum at the University of Alaska - Fairbanks, and trips out to the trans Alaska pipeline are common since it passes close to Fairbanks on it way from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.
